Statement of Issue:

As the largest segment of health care workers, the nursing profession can play a crucial role in making possible the objectives set forth by the 2010 Affordable Care Act. ). Nurses are uniquely positioned to lead the charge to ensure that accessible, high-quality patient-focused care is available to the nation’s diverse patient population (ANA, 2011). Barriers need to be overcome to ensure that nurses are well positioned to lead change and advance health (IOM, 2011).

The Tri-Council for Nursing, comprised of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), American Nurses Association ANA), American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), and National League for Nursing (NLN), strongly endorse the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on The Future of Nursing and call for collaboration to advance the report’s recommendations (Tri-Council, 2010). The IOM (2011) report contains four key messages;

1. Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training.

2. Nurses should achieve higher levels of education through improved educational systems that promote seamless academic progress.

3. Nurses should be full partners with physicians and other healthcare professionals in redesigning healthcare in the United States.

4. Effective workforce planning and policy making requires better data collection and infrastructure.

Position Statement:

It is the belief of the North Texas Organization of Nurse Executives (NTONE) that nurse leaders’ have a responsibility to incorporate the key messages and recommendations from the IOM report into daily practice environments, strategic planning processes, and to actively seek involvement at the local, state, and federal levels. Furthermore, the nurse leaders of NTONE believe that we can impact all levels of nursing to effectively and appropriately serve as partners in the health care team.
